Troubleshooting Edgebanding Issues

Identification of Edgebanding application issues, their common causes, and how to go about troubleshooting Edgebanding issues.

Edgebanding  pulls off easily by hand, leaving the hotmelt Adhesive remains on the chipboard leaving the grid pattern of the glue application roller.

  • Too little Adhesive applied
  • Room temperature not high enough
  • Edgebanding material  and hotmelt Adhesive not warm enough
  • Feed rate not high enough
  • Not enough pressure applied by application roller

Edgebanding  pulls off easily by hand, leaving the hotmelt Adhesive on the chipboard BUT the hotmelt adhesive surface is totally smooth.

  • Board and/or Edgebanding not warm enough
  • Possible incorrect hotmelt adhesive used
  • Possible incorrect bonding agent

Edgebanding  pulls off easily by hand, leaving the hotmelt Adhesive on the chipboard BUT the hotmelt comes off with Edgebanding.

  • Need to cool down the temperature of board material

Open Adhesive joint where a Edgebanding gluing machine was used.

  • Not enough pressure applied
  • Adhesive not warm enough
  • Need to increase application temperature
  • Need to preheat board
  • Need to increase the feed rate
  • Edgebanding needs to be pretensioned

Open Adhesive joint (machining centre)

  • Not enough pressure applied
  • Edgebanding was not warm enough when it was fed in and cannot be squeezed
  • Edgebanding material restoring force needs to be lowered
  • Need to increase heater power
  • Need to reduce feed rate
  • Increase geometry
  • Need to use a thinner Edgebanding
  • Adhesive not suited for use in machine centres, adhesion under heat too

Edgebanding only bonded at the edge

  • Not enough pressure applied
  • Milled joint on board hollow
  • Edgebanding pretensioning needs to be decreased

Inadequate bonding of the glued Edgebanding or the Edgebanding is chipped due to misaligned adhesive application roller

  • xmisaligned glue application roller lead to lack of Adhesive being applied
  • Align roller
  • Increase the amount of Adhesive

Visibility of the milling waves

  • Feed rate needs to be lowered
  • Cutting speed of cutters needs to be increased
  • Re-process with scrapers and buffing; cut against the feed
  • Increase number of cutters on router bit
  • Increase rpm

Slight fading of color in the milled areas of thick Edgebanding (stress whitening)

  • Warm up milled area with hot-air station (can be retrotted)
  • Scraper blade chips too thick
  • Rework on buffing station
  • Reduce scraper blade chip thickness (max. 0.1 – 0.2 mm)

Evidence of stress whitening in radius during machine centre processing

  • Edgebanding fed in while not warm enough
  • Heater power not high enough
  • Lower the feed rate
  • Increase geometry
  • Use a thinner Edgebanding

Adhesive stringy after application

  • Lower the  application temperature
  • Clean gluing part
  • Try different adhesive

Mice teeth in the joint

  • Apply more Adhesive
  • Increase application temperature
  • Preheat board

Breakout of longitudinal edges after cross-edging

  • Only format MDF board and use
  • Check the router for immersion depth
  • Reduce material removal or use different chipboard

Edgebanding surface print damaged during machine centre processing

  • Use special rubber rollers

“Indentations” or “scratches” in the Edgebanding

  • Clean Edgebanding draw-in
  • Clean press rollers and spray with separating agent
  • Clean scanning head; if this does not help then check scanning head for damage and replace, if necessary

Breakouts or smears at Edgebanding ends

  • Sharpen cross-cut saw
  • Ask the tool manufacturer for a suitable tool

Breakouts on top and bottom edges

  • Reduce Edgebanding overhang
  • Acclimatise Edgebanding and boards one day prior to processing (over 18°C)
  • Increase room temperature and prevent draught

Edgebanding smears when copying

  • Reduce number of blades
  • Control rpm
  • Mill Edgebanding against the feed
  • Increase feed rate

2-in-1 offset in corners

  • Accurately set Edgebanding
  • Minimise Edgebanding overhang
  • Check that Edgebanding is straight
