Edgebanding Processing Information

PVC Edgebanding

1. Special features of PVC Edgebanding

Canplast PVC Edgebanding are extruded and fully solid colored. Solid coloring of the material enables clean and simple rounding of edges. The impact resistant formulation of Canplast PVC material guarantees a long service life of milling and other cutting tools.Canplast PVC Edgebanding is coated on the back with a universal bonding agent for perfect adhesion, together with all suitable hot melt glues or solvent-based adhesives, to substrates.

2. Material characteristics of PVC

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is one of today’s best known and most common plastics. Edgebanding has been manufactured from this material for the furniture industry also for more than 40 years and have, due to their outstanding materials properties, proven very successful. Especially the excellent processing characteristics of PVC have contributed to its penetration of the furniture manufacturing market.

3. Applications for Canplast PVC Edgebanding

The scope for application of Canplast PVC Edgebanding is virtually unlimited: from offices bathroom and kitchen, exhibition stands and shop fitting, in the home and up to general interior furnishing. The Canplast PVC raw material formulation is particularly application friendly and, in addition to straight-line processing, also enables simple application to all curved furniture components, irrespective whether inside or outside radii are required.

4. Processing by machine

Canplast PVC Edgebanding may be processed using hot melt adhesive techniques on all Edgebanding gluing machines (straight processing and machining centers). Gluing, cross-cutting, milling, scraping and subsequent buffing with polishing wheels and hot-air dryers for high quality surfaces poses no problem. To ensure clean and durable Edgebanding finishing, certain important processing parameters which may be dependent on materials used (Edgebanding, adhesive, boards), on the Edgebanding gluing machine and on ambient temperature, must be observed. Trials to determine relevant optimal settings are therefore recommended. Manufacturers’ guidelines for an intended application should also be considered.

Adhesives

Canplast PVC Edgebanding may be processed using any standard hot melt adhesive (EVA, PA, APAO, PUR). Used in combination with the low-shrink raw material formulation of Canplast PVC, highly heat-resistant adhesives can guarantee reliable bonding even on Edgebanding thicker than 3 mm. Particularly heat-resistant adhesives are recommended for applications exposed to high temperatures, e.g. near kitchen ovens or for furniture exported in containers.  Canplast PVC Edgebanding exhibit very low “free shrinkage” before gluing already. Another positive feature is the dimensional stability of PVC Edgebanding: The material starts softening only after 80 (± 2)°C (Vicat B 50). Ensure that the container has sufficient glue to maintain a constant temperature during application. The glue application temperature will vary between 90°C and 220°C, depending on the type of adhesive. Please note that thermostats in hot melt hoppers are often inaccurate and may deviate considerably from the actual temperature on application rollers. It is advisable to measure the temperature on the application roller. Canplast PVC Edgebanding cannot be glued using PVAC glue and the cold activation method.

Application temperature

For best results fitting Edgebanding, work with boards and Edgebanding at room temperature (not below 18°C). Material stored outdoors should be warmed up overnight. Hot melt glue will cure before the Edgebanding is in place if the temperature of the board or Edgebanding is too low. Draughts should for this reason also be avoided.

Wood moisture

The optimal moisture content of the boards should be between 7 and 10% for further processing.

Feed rate

The special raw material formulation of Canplast PVC Edgebanding is designed for feed rates both in low as well as high volume processing. Depending on the Edgebanding gluing machine, speeds between 10 and 100 m/min. are possible. Speeds up to

30 m/min. are also feasible on modern portal type machining centers, depending on profile shape.

Rates of adhesive application

Please follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions. Apply the adhesive evenly and in sufficient quantities for beads of adhesive to be pressed out along the edges of the freshly glued Edgebanding, ensuring that the gaps between chips are filled. The amount of glue required depends on the density of the chipboard and the type of adhesive.

Press rollers

Bearing in mind the machine parameters, ensure that an adequate number of rollers are available and adjust the pressure to achieve the best possible appearance of the joint.

Extraction

Thermoplastic Edgebanding require higher extraction power than duroplastic Edgebanding. The advantage of Canplast PVC Edgebanding is the lower static charge picked up when compared to other thermoplastic raw materials.

Milling

If possible, use cutters with 3 to 6 teeth, with ca. 70 mm diameter and at speeds between 12 000 and 18 000 rpm. Incorrect speeds or blunt cutters may damage the Edgebanding. In the event of smearing, reduce the speed of the cutter or cut against the feed (increase feed, if necessary).

Scraping
Because PVC tends to fade after scraping, the plastic scrapings should not exceed 0.1 to 0.2 mm in thickness. To avoid chatter marks, the routers used for milling should be running true Diamond coated cutters are recommended. Hot air blowers may be useful to optimize scraping, particularly where color quality is critical.

Buffing

Canplast PVC Edgebanding are easy to buff on their radii using a buffing wheel. Any fading after scraping may simply be buffed away with these wheels, with the color of the radius then matching that of the Edgebanding itself. With through-feed Edgebanding gluing machines, remnants of the glue may also be removed with the buffing wheel. Glue remnants may also be removed using electronically controlled separating agent spraying units as is common in industry. This improves the scraper blade finish as well.

5. Manual processing

Canplast PVC Edgebanding may also be applied manually, using a gluing jig or Edgebanding press, for instance. 2-component, acrylic based dispersion adhesives or suitable contact adhesives are recommended. For further information, please contact your adhesives manufacturer directly. Single component wood PVAC glue is not suitable for gluing. Special lacquer adhesives, solvent glues or cartridge adhesives (PU) may be used for manual gluing. We will gladly provide you with a list of adhesives on request.

Gluing should be carried out at room temperature.

To achieve optimal Edgebanding bond when using contact adhesives, ensure that the cure time after applying adhesive to Edgebanding and board is observed. This is followed by tapping on the edgeband.

Heating to speed up adhesion (e.g. heating rails) is superfluous when using dispersion glues. Processing may continue after curing (up to ca. 6 hours, depending on adhesive) (see Point 4).

6. Mechanical characteristics

Resistance to abrasion

The surface of printed Canplast PVC Edgebands is sealed with UV-hardened acrylic varnish to give a scratch-resistant finish. The printed patterns also have excellent resistance to scratching and abrasion.

Ball indentation/shore hardness D

Canplast PVC also scores excellent surface hardness pursuant to DIN EN ISO 2039-1 or DIN EN ISO 868.

Resistance to warp under heat

With a withstand value of 80 (± 2)°C as per Vicat B 50, Canplast PVC Edgebands are ideally suited for use in the furniture industry and for interior fittings.

Varnishing

Plain colored Canplast PVC Edgebands may easily be varnished in the color of your choice, without the need for pre-treatment. Contact your coatings manufacturer for the most suitable type of varnish.

The Canplast Technical Department uses a special method for regular tests on Canplast ABS Edgebands for lightfastness. With a permanence of 7 to 8 on the wool color scale, they are ideal for interior use (DIN EN 15187).

8. Cleaning

Special plastic cleaning agents are recommended for cleaning Canplast PVC Edgebands. Do not use substances with high solvent content.

9. Disposal

PVC processing waste should be separated out. A system exists for the return of such waste materials.

10. Quality/Tolerances

The consistently high quality of Canplast PVC Edgebanding is ensured through comprehensive quality assurance measures such as ongoing improvement of raw material properties by our own Technical Department. The manufacturing tolerances for Edgebanding are tight and are checked for each manufacturing run.

TopGloss Edgebanding

1. Special features of Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding

Canplast has developed a novel method for manufacturing TopGloss Edgebanding, representing a new generation of Edgebanding for furniture manufacture.

Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding are made of ultra-transparent acrylic. The special, three-dimensional effect of the Edgebanding is created by the surface print on the reverse side.

Because the surface print is on the back of the Edgebanding, it also remains fully intact after milling the radius, creating a uniform appearance all-round, with no frame effects. The matt silk Edgebanding surface may be polished to virtually any desired gloss. Polishing is unnecessary with premium type 3D Edgebands, since they have a finishing varnish already.

Since the surface print is on the reverse side, it cannot be rubbed o or damaged, no matter how high the stress. Physical damage to the acrylic surface, such as scratches or indentations, is easily remedied by buffing.

Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding are impact resistant, hygienic and withstand normal humidity of ambient air.

2. Acrylic material characteristics

Acrylic (PMMA = Polymethylmethacrylate) is an established high grade thermoplastic, setting new technical and aesthetic furniture edging standards in in the form of the Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding. The transparency of Acrylic furthermore exceeds that of glass.

3. Applications for Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding

Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding may be used virtually anywhere: e.g. as facings on kitchen and living room furniture, in bathrooms, on kitchen worktops and office desks and for shop fittings and interiors.

4. Processing by machine

Due to a special formulation of materials with excellent processing characteristics, Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding is easy to process either manually or by machine.

Through-feed

Straight processing of Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding poses no problems on all conventional edgeband gluing machines. It must be ensured that neither edgeband conveyor nor feed roller will damage the edgeband. Rubberized rollers for edgeband feed through have proven their merit in these machines. TopGloss Edgebanding require meticulous milling of the joints. This applies to DC 7XXR especially.

Work station processing

For work station Edgebanding processing, many machine manufacturers (e.g. IMA or HOMAG) recommend applying hot melt adhesive onto the edgeband directly. To prevent damage to the edgeband finish, Canplast and the machine manufacturers have together developed special adhesive application rollers. These gluing rollers are modifications of conventional steel rollers. Processing of edgebands (including all primed edgeband materials) using these special adhesive application rollers has been tried and tested. Machining centers which apply hot melt adhesive to the board (such as BIESSE or MORBIDELLI) do not need special rollers for adhesive application.

Rubberized rollers should always be used for conveyance and feeding of Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding through the processing machines

Bonding

Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding are consistently coated with a universal primer to assure perfect bonding to all suitable hot melt adhesives. Special dispersion adhesives may be used for manual gluing, provided the given pressing time is adhered to (see manual processing). Doellken TopGloss Edgebanding may be glued using most EVA, PA, APAO or PUR5 based hot melt adhesives.

Adhesion quality is generally best using unfilled or partially filled adhesives. As with highly heat-resistant types of adhesive such as PUR6, APAO or PA hot melt adhesives, the low-shrink material formulation of Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding deliver reliable adhesion, even at higher application temperatures.

This feature is especially advantageous near hobs and ovens in kitchens or for export of furniture in containers.

“Free shrinkage” of Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding is excellent already even before gluing. The dimensional stability of Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding is another advantage here: Vicat B 50 testing shows that softening of the material only starts at temperatures over 90 (± 3)°C.

It should be ensured with machine gluing that the glue hopper always has sufficient adhesive available. Apply the adhesive evenly and in sufficient quantities for beads of adhesive to be pressed out along the edges of the freshly glued Edgebanding, ensuring that the spaces between chips will be filled and gluing is full-surface. The amount of glue applied depends, among other things, on the density of the chipboard: the lower the density, the hotter the hot melt adhesive will be required.

The adhesive manufacturers recommended processing guidelines must be heeded. Depending on the adhesive type and base, the application temperature specified by the manufacturer may vary from 90°C to 210°C. Please note that the thermostats in the hot melt hopper are often inaccurate and may vary considerably from the actual temperature on the application roller. On request, we will gladly provide a list of hot melt adhesive types suitable for use in machining centers.

Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding cannot be glued using PVAC glues and the cold activation method.

Application temperature

For best results fitting Edgebanding, work with boards and Edgebanding at room temperature (not below 18°C). Material stored outdoors should be warmed up overnight. If the boards or Edgebanding are too cold, the hot melt adhesive will cure before edgeband application. Draughts should for this reason also be avoided.

Wood moisture

The optimal moisture content for further processing of the boards is between 7 and 10%.

Feed rate

Speeds up to 30 m/min. are easily achieved.

Press rollers

Considering machine parameters, the correct number and adjustment of the press rollers is paramount to achieving optimal appearance of the joint. To prevent gaps or cavities from appearing, the pressure of the rollers should be set high enough to ensure full-surfaced Edgebanding adhesion to the boards. The pressure rollers as such must be clean to prevent pressure marks on the Edgebanding.

Cross-cut blades

Cross-cut blades should be sharp enough to cut the Edgebanding material cleanly, leaving a minimum overhang for cross-cut milling to facilitate final trim by milling.

Cross-cut saw

Cross-cut saws should have their feed rate adjusted to allow clean cutting of the Edgebanding. Single-edged fine-toothed “ES” type saw teeth are advantageous, since they produce a neater cut through the edgeband than cross-cut saw blades with “WS” type alternating teeth, for instance.

Flush or radius milling

The overhang for cutting should be the same on both sides and not exceed 1.5 mm. The edgeband overhang should prefer- ably not exceed the Edgebanding thickness. Too much overhang will increase the risk of chipping. Special design effects may be achieved by using chamfer bits on Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding. As a rule, multi-blade tools with at least 4 to 6 blades and an operating speed of 12 000 – 18 000 rpm are recommended for chamfering.

Scraping

Scraping of Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding will yield excellent results with no stress whitening. To prevent stress whitening, plastic scrapings should not exceed 0.1 mm in thickness.

Polishing

After machining, the material may be polished with a soft buffing wheel to achieve virtually any desired gloss. A high gloss is easily achieved with polishing paste. We will gladly provide a list of suitable types on request. Some machine manufacturers are offering mechanical polishing units. Please contact your machine manufacturer in this regard. Adhesive residuals may also be removed using electronically controlled release agent spray guns. It is essential when using auxiliary process agents (such as release agents) to ensure that they do not contain solvents and alcohols, since PMMA should not come into contact with these.

Extraction

Thermoplastic Edgebanding generally require higher extraction power than duroplastic or melamineEdgebanding. Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding have an advantage of lower electrostatic charging compared to other thermoplastic edgeband materials.

5. Manual processing

Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding also easily be applied manually, at room temperature. Gluing jigs or Edgebanding clamps would be useful accessories. Adhesive manufacturers can offer special dispersion glues for application without any aids. We will gladly provide a list of suitable types on request.

No contact adhesives containing solvents should in principle be used!

PUR7 adhesives or systems with similar characteristics are preferred for special requirements such as kitchen worktops (waterproof and resistant to warping under heat). Chipboards should be masked at the joint during manual application, to prevent staining due to excess glue.

Warming the material at radii

The areas to form should be carefully heated to thermoelastic temperatures (100 – 120 °C), using hot air or infrared heaters. The softened Edgebanding should then be molded using a wooden block to match the shape of the board and fixated using a jig. Be careful not to excessively stretch the material. The Edgebanding must be clamped in its shape until it cools down. Once fully cooled down, it may be glued as usual (press-on time per adhesive manufacturer’s instructions). This method applies to both BAZ and standard material.

The Edgebanding overhang may be trimmed using a manual router, for instance. For high durability, diamond-tipped or carbide cutters are recommended. Should smearing occur, the speed of rotation often requires adjusting or the direction of rotation of the router may need to change. Best results are generally achieved by cutting against the feed.

Any chatter marks remaining after milling can be removed or smoothed out with emery paper or abrasive sponge (240 to 400 grain). Top results may be achieved by buffing the material with a buffing wheel and also using polishing agents as required. This facilitates creating the desired level of gloss both on the milled edge and on the face.

6. Mechanical characteristics

Resistance to abrasion

Because the surface prints are applied to the back of the Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding, they will be protected against external mechanical stress (such as abrasion and scratches).

Ball indentation hardness/Shore hardness D

Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding achieve excellent surface hardness pursuant to DIN EN ISO 2039-1 or DIN EN ISO 868. Surface damage to the base material (such as scratches or abrasion) may simply be polished away.

Resistance to warpage under heat

Sporting a value of 90 (± 3)°C (pursuant to DIN EN ISO 306), Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding are superbly suited to applications in the furniture industry and interior finishes.

7. Lightfastness

The Canplast laboratory uses a special method for regular tests on Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding for lightfastness. The lightfastness of Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding was rated as excellent to outstanding. This corresponds to a value of 7 to 8 on the wool color scale.

8. Surface quality

Silk gloss to high gloss. Achieved by buffing with soft buffing wheels made of cotton or similar material. Polishing agents sui- table for acrylic may also be used without a problem. By applying finishing varnish, premium type surfaces may be rendered matt to high gloss.

9. Cleaning

Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding may be cleaned using ordinary soapy water or special cleaners specifically formulated for cleaning of acrylic materials.

Never use substances containing solvents or alcohol!

10. Disposal

Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding material may be incinerated together with wood shavings. No chlorine compounds are generated. Other TA-Luft [Technical Guidelines on Air Quality] limits should be observed during incineration.

11. Quality/Tolerances

The consistently high quality of Canplast TopGloss Edgebanding is ensured through comprehensive quality assurance measures such as ongoing improvement of raw material properties by our own Technical Department. The manufacturing tolerances for TopGloss Edgebanding are closely defined and regularly checked for each manufacturing run.
